Zhou Wan'er, a newly popular third-tier actress, faints in the bathroom and wakes up inside the historical drama about an arranged bride swap that she had just harshly criticized and rejected. She has become the story's villainess.
In the original story, the villainess Zhou Wan fell and hit her head on the eve of her wedding. While in a daze, she dreamed of several scenes from the future:
Tomorrow, she is to marry Qin Jianguo, a twice-married man in the county seat who still pines for his beloved ex-wife. He is cold and critical toward her. Her stepchildren don't accept her, and she remains childless for years after the wedding, enduring vicious gossip. She doesn't even have the courage to ask for a divorce, and her life is unbearably miserable.
Her twin sister, Zhou Hong, is marrying on the same day to Jiang Bo, a famous sickly man in the county. She takes over Jiang Bo's job, and when he dies three years later, she uses his substantial inheritance to go into business. She meets the college-educated son of a deputy factory manager, and the two marry, succeeding in both love and business.
After catching a glimpse of the future, the original Zhou Wan immediately calls off the wedding. She even threatens to kill herself rather than marry into the Qin family in the county seat and become a stepmother.
To secure the promised bride price, two temporary jobs, the three Zhou men decide to go all the way and swap their two daughters in marriage. The girls already look alike, after all.
The original villainess stops making a fuss, and the original heroine accepts their father's arrangement. Zhou Wan and Zhou Hong switch grooms.
Personality determines fate! Even with the same marriage, different people can have different outcomes.
In the script, after heroine Zhou Hong switches brides, her new husband and stepchildren gradually open their hearts to her and cherish her like a treasure. She becomes the beloved stepmother praised by everyone in the factory compound, and two years into the marriage, she gets pregnant and gives birth to a boy.
The truth behind the original villainess's infertility is also revealed: before deciding to remarry, Qin Jianguo had undergone a vasectomy to honor his promise to his ex-wife.
In this life, for the heroine he falls in love with after their marriage, Qin Jianguo is willing to risk going to the hospital for a not-yet-well-established reversal surgery.
On the day of the surgery, the villainess Zhou Wan comes to the hospital, catches him, and learns the truth. She completely loses it and sees Qin Jianguo and the heroine, her twin sister, as sworn enemies.
She acts out in every way possible. Before Jiang Bo can die, she manages to drive herself to divorce, suffering the consequences of her actions again and again.
She spends the rest of her life consumed by envy, jealousy, and hatred, living an ineffectual life and blaming everyone else. She's both hateful and pitiful.
Actress Zhou Wan'er arrives at the wedding after the bride swap!
Jiang Bo, the county's famous sickly man, enters the bridal chamber and meets a pair of frightened, wary, peach-blossom eyes.
Zhou Wan'er volunteers, "I'm Zhou Wan, the youngest daughter of the Zhou family. If you don't mind, I'll do my best to repay you in the future."
Compared with the Zhou family, who would sooner tear the flesh from their daughters' bones, Zhou Wan would rather stay with the small, uncomplicated Jiang family. When Jiang Bo dies in the future, she'll inherit his job and estate, and continue caring for his grandmother until the end of her life.
Jiang Bo doesn't ask any more about how the bride swap came about. After a bout of wracking coughs, he finally replies, "All right."
The Zhou family married off their daughters for two temporary jobs, the Qin family wanted someone to look after the children, and Jiang Bo wanted to put his grandmother's mind at ease while she recovered. To them, it didn't matter which daughter married into their family.
Hoping to repay Jiang Bo by making his remaining days as easy and pleasant as possible, Zhou Wan'er takes over his job and earns money to support the household. She takes him out to exercise every morning and evening, and scours the county and countryside for good food and drink.
As the days pass, the three years from the original plot go by. Jiang Bo coughs less and less, grows fairer, and gets fitter, with no sign that he's gravely ill or about to die...
Jiang Bo, now at home with time on his hands, studies traditional Chinese medicine on his own. Feeling the increasingly obvious signs of pregnancy at Zhou Wan'er's pulse, he smiles and asks, "What are you thinking about, Wan'er?"
Zhou Wan'er is wondering whether Jiang Bo is still going to die. She can't bear the thought of losing him anymore.
She clasps his hand, her expression resolute. "Tomorrow, let's buy another two jin of meat and go see Doctor Lin! You should ask him to take you on as an apprentice!"
The Buddha can't save people; people must save themselves.
Zhou Wan'er decisively changes her plans and encourages Jiang Bo to keep studying medicine and taking care of his health. In two years, she hopes to drag him along to take the university entrance exam!
