When Fu Xi was little, he was in a car accident. One side of his body was crushed beneath a tire, leaving it a bloody, mangled mess. Medical care was poor, so his grandmother, who lived alone in the countryside, wrapped him in cotton and cloth to stop the bleeding.
From then on, a doll wearing human skin grew up.
His remarried father was afraid of him and shut him away in a room with only one tiny window. Outside the door, the cries, laughter, and play of children could always be heard. The little window was dim, and sunlight rarely found its way inside. That window was always present in Fu Xi's memories of childhood.
Then new neighbors moved into the house upstairs. Fu Xi could always hear their lively laughter. When spring came, long vines would hang from his little window, covered in beautiful flowers.
He often sat by the window and looked outside, because there was always a child on the little plaza, laughing freely and playing happily.
One day, he finally left his room, only to be cruelly locked inside a factory by the other children. It was dark, and no one came looking for him. He had only the rats that scurried out from time to time for company, and they tried to gnaw at his body.
The old window creaked, then was shoved open. Xu Si, his face covered in dust, appeared in Fu Xi's world like a ray of sunlight growing wild: bright and dazzling. He ruthlessly claimed the heart of this inhuman being.
As a child, Xu Si wiped his dusty face, patted his chest, and told him, "I'll protect you."
As an adult, Fu Xi took Xu Si's hand and pressed it through his thin chest, letting Xu Si touch the soft cotton and the burning-hot "heart" within. Then he said, "We'll be together forever."
