Shiro Nohara, Who Lived a Million Times

Before he had a name, Nohara Shiro was a puppy abandoned in a cardboard box. Then a five-year-old human boy found him and took him home. The boy was called Shinnosuke, and that day Shiro got a new name. One day, Shiro was hit by a car while trying to save a cat. His usually carefree little master made a fuss, insisting that they had to save him no matter what. He said Shiro was part of the Nohara family. Shiro was so happy! His tail wagged like a propeller. If he could, he wanted to stay with the boy forever and never be apart. The calico cat's ancestor, whom Shiro had saved, licked its fur and said, "You're one lucky, silly dog. I'm descended from the cat in The Cat That Lived a Million Times." The cat said its family had a special constitution: they couldn't truly die before finding happiness, and they kept their memories through every reincarnation. To thank Shiro for his kindness, the cat lent him [Immortality]. And so Shiro set off in search of happiness, which meant finding his way home. But Shiro was troubled. On his way to find his little master, he kept meeting people who worried him terribly: A police officer who risked his own safety to catch criminals; A bandaged black-haired weirdo who thought about suicide every day and kept hurting himself; A noble young man whose frail health was failing, yet who was growing increasingly strange; A young man forced to fight in the Holy Grail War to save a girl named Sakura; A white-haired mafia boss who treated the world like a game and ended up getting in over his head. To repay the men who had taken care of him for a while, Shiro, who wouldn't die easily, did everything he could to pull them back from the brink of death. The men Shiro saved couldn't understand why dogs were always so willing to sacrifice themselves. After the little white dog lost its life saving them, they prayed to every god they could think of, hoping it would come back to life and bark at them with all its usual energy. Reading Guide: 1.
