Ning Yu first meets Bo Qingyun on a cold, rainy night.
She mistakenly wanders into his study and sees the boy hunched over his desk beneath the dim yellow lamplight. His frame is thin, his expression pale and indifferent. He turns to look at her, his noble, sharp phoenix eyes filled with apathy.
"Get out."
Those are the first words he says to her.
The butler hurries over and apologizes to him with an ingratiating smile. The boy is uninterested, only raising an eyebrow when he hears, "This is your younger sister."
He speaks coldly.
"I don't have a sister."
Ning Yu remembers him: Bo Qingyun, the eldest young master of the Bo family.
The butler says he has been frail and sickly since birth, and doctors have diagnosed that he won't live past twenty-four. As a result, he has become sharp-tongued and aloof.
He never lets anyone into his study.
So on that night of thunder and rain, her eyes blurred with tears and her whole body trembling, she dares only to knock softly on his study door.
"M-Master Bo, I'm a little scared. Could I... stay with you?"
Bo Qingyun looks at the girl's pale, slender legs beneath her pure white nightdress. His gaze darkens, his voice rough.
"Has no one ever taught you to call someone 'big brother' when you're asking for a favor?"

Ning Yu never imagined that one day she would be pinned inside this study that no one was ever allowed to enter, with her so-called "brother" greedily stealing her breath.
Her hands are pulled over her shoulders and restrained against the wall. The man she is supposed to marry is standing just outside the door, on the other side of the wall.
Bo Qingyun lingers at her lips, breathing softly, his gaze cold and possessive.
"Do you want to make a sound, little sister?"
He rubs the red marks on Ning Yu's neck with suggestive tenderness, then leans down again.
"You won't marry anyone else before I die."
His illness will get better.
