In the year 125 of the New Era, Shao Xun, leader of the Three-Legged Crow, was arrested.
She had flouted federal law and repeatedly incited unrest in the Lower City, and was sentenced to life in prison inside a virtual consciousness.
At the same time, the Dreammaker robot, Knight, was launched, and sold out on its very first day.
It's said that every Upper City citizen who connects to it gets a full night of peaceful sleep.
A helper named A Xun started working at Old Chu's Noodle Shop.
She doesn't say much, is quick on her feet, and is great at fishing noodles out of the pot. She just isn't very bright, and keeps insisting she's from another world.
Ships hurry through the seaside town. Outside the noodle shop, no one pays any attention to Shao Xun's strange talk, except for a sharp-minded child she once rescued, who believes every word.
"It's fake. I'm the real one."
The dream prison shatters, and the Knight pod opens.
Skyscrapers rise into the sky, a mechanical moon hangs overhead, the plutocrats live in splendor, and the Lower City is cramped and cold.
Shao Xun rubs her eyes and opens her arms to embrace the world she's been away from for so long.
She tells the prisoners waking alongside her, "It's time for the Three-Legged Crow to shine."
[Bonus Scene]
Years later, the Three-Legged Crow is no longer a rebel group everyone loves to hate. Its flag has been planted on the mechanical moon.
"It's true, the Lower City is nothing but a boundless sea of suffering." Facing a forest of cameras and microphones from federal reporters, the young doctor, who has hyperthymesia, smiles and offers a heartfelt tribute to his leader. "Thankfully, the sun rose over the sea and saved us from being swept under."
