Only Daughter

As of 2021, China had around 180 million only children.

According to data queried on DS, China has 1,299 counties, with around 250 to 300 million people living in county seats, including 15 to 25 million only children. Around 7 to 11.3 million of them are only daughters.

Unlike only daughters born in provincial capitals or other major cities, these millions of girls are county-seat only daughters, born from a unique era in China's five-thousand-year history.

This story follows only daughters growing up in small county towns, intertwining the family ties they inherit, the friendships they form, and the love they find as adults.
