The story is told mostly from the shou's perspective, with some chapters from the gong's perspective.
As human society develops at a rapid pace, plants and animals are also constantly changing. Tens of millions of years later, human genders have changed from male and female to the six ABO genders. A tiny number of plants and animals evolve enough to take human form, a process called "taking human form," and share the same six genders as humans.
