The night before her engagement banquet, her fiance asked Yuan Zhen to deliver an important item to a villa on the mountaintop. That night, she was driving along a winding mountain road when a thick fog suddenly rose. No matter what she did, she could not get out of that five-kilometer stretch of road.
The next day, after the fog cleared, passersby found Yuan Zhen dead in her car, without a scratch on her. The cause of death was unknown.
When Yuan Zhen woke again, she was in a chaotic, formless state, unable to see anything clearly. She drifted and drifted, discovering that she seemed to be in a space with no physical form.
One day, Yuan Zhen drifted to a place where roiling black energy formed a boundary, threatening to surge out. After a moment's thought, she charged straight at it.
Who knew how much time had passed? Her vision gradually cleared, and voices flooded her ears.
Yuan Zhen tried hard to look. Below her was a vast plaza filled with thousands of figures in all shapes and forms.
A high platform stood in the plaza, shaped like a tombstone. Before it stood a tall figure dressed in black, his voice ringing through the air: "The hundred-year pact of the Ghost Prison is about to arrive. My Fourth Realm has sent forth all its finest subjects. I, He Wu, await the future Prison Mistress here. In the days to come, we will join hands to protect the Ghost Prison!"
The crowd roared in response.
The man at the front beneath the platform stood silent and stern. His build and profile looked almost exactly like those of Yuan Zhen's fiance, Cang Sun.
Only later did Yuan Zhen learn that this otherworld was divided into four realms, what the mortal world commonly called the netherworld. The netherworld was more than the First Realm, the Gate of Earth, where souls were received for reincarnation. There was also the Second Realm, Essence of Life, where the best of all things gathered; the Third Realm, the Demon Prison, a remnant of ancient times; and the most mysterious Fourth Realm on the edge of existence: the Ghost Prison.
