Yuan Niang was originally an embroiderer from another county. A great flood left her homeless, and she settled in Liuxian County with a group of refugees.
With no one to rely on, she helped care for children at the orphanage, where she found a place to stay. With the official matchmaker acting as guarantor, Yuan Niang married a hunter she had met only once.
The hunter was tall and powerfully built. Yuan Niang was afraid he had a fierce temper, and trembled with fear on their wedding night.
As it turned out, the hunter was poor but a very good man. He just had a bit of a bad reputation. He had built a house by himself at the foot of the mountain, and though they were poor, Yuan Niang didn't mind. She only hoped they could build a good life together.
He hunted while she embroidered. They raised chickens and ducks and built a new house. Vegetables grew in the courtyard, lotus flowers bloomed beyond the wall, and little children ran around the table legs...
