#Also known as: After Deceiving a Handsome, Strong, and Miserable Man, I Ran Away with a Cat
"A crafty, self-serving fox at heart vs. a cold, stiff immortal on the outside"
Single designer Lin Zhaozhao transmigrates to ancient times with her cat Jinbao, becoming a timid little embroiderer. From the start, she is dragging around a sickly body and has six taels of silver. That’s all she has.
Lin Zhaozhao: “...”
Six taels are enough to get by. At least she still has Jinbao, and the two of them can communicate. (Other people can’t understand them.)
Just as she’s preparing to escape her life as a donkey turning a millstone, her beloved cat Jinbao slowly tells her what it overheard three days ago: her vicious elder brother and sister-in-law plan to sell her!
Lin Zhaozhao: “...”
What impeccable timing. Other people get a golden finger when they transmigrate, but her golden finger, a cat that can hear people’s thoughts, thinks her life isn’t miserable enough and gives her disastrous start an extra stab in the back.
In an instant, a fire breaks out. She grabs a bundle and flees amid the confusion, only to find the back door locked. In her moment of desperation, the back of her neck goes numb and she is knocked unconscious. When she wakes, she finds herself facing a stunningly handsome man, as graceful as an immortal and radiant as the spring moon. He’s good-looking, all right, but awfully cold. She hears he’s also a wealthy and powerful young master.
Lin Zhaozhao can’t figure out why he captured her and is now feeding and housing such an idle person so well. With nothing better to do, she climbs a wall in the middle of the night, accidentally saves a lovely young woman who has fallen into the clutches of a pleasure house, and accidentally kicks a spoiled young nobleman.
In short, before one mess is resolved, she’s gotten herself into another. What’s she to do? She needs a powerful patron to protect her!
So she starts talking her way out of things, and tells the handsome man about a “secret” he cares about. He believes her. Not only does he really take her away from the wolves’ den, but along the way she bullies him from time to time: eating his food, wearing his clothes, and even ditching him when they get off the boat.
Just as she’s basking in the glory of a successful escape, they come face-to-face in the largest brothel in Qingzhou, staring wide-eyed at each other.
Run! Where can she run?
With her wrist caught, she acts cute, plays the helpless innocent, and humbles herself. Lin Zhaozhao’s greatest strength is knowing how to read the situation. If she can’t get away, she might as well join him! So she agrees to manage one of his shops, and keeps eating his food, drinking his drinks, and spending his money.
But just as he’s doing well as a crooked merchant, he accidentally sheds a secret identity and turns out to be an official, while she becomes a suspect. Once she finally pieces things together, she realizes that she thought she was the one playing the hawk, when in fact the hawk had her firmly in its grasp.
Later, he accidentally sheds another secret identity and turns out to be a young nobleman. She stops running and focuses on whether he can shed one more. Well, it turns out he has no more secret identities to shed. She wraps her arms around the handsome man and says, “Time for bed!”
Chen Yuanfeng tests her in every way. At first, he thinks she is cunning, brazen, and utterly shameless, the person hiding the map to a silver mine. So he watches her, captures her, and wants to flay her alive. Only in the end does he realize she’s a complete airhead, a coward, and too stupid to recognize a good person when she sees one. She’s a sharp-tongued delinquent who never takes advantage of anything. He can’t help protecting her, helping her, and taking care of all the aftermath.
“Meow, these two-legged tomcats and she-cats have no shame!”
Jinbao, the cat, thinks that having to deal with one foolish two-legged creature is already enough trouble. Who knew another troublemaker would come along?
Its life as a cat is apparently destined to involve eavesdropping on villains and passing on messages.
Reading Guide
1. Happy ending / one-on-one romance
2. The plot is not a brain-burning political power struggle. The entire story centers on human nature and the idea that the world is a slapdash operation cobbled together on the fly.
3. The heroine is self-serving. Most of the time, she’s scheming to earn silver, eat well, drink well, and pet cats. She claws her way up from the bottom, talks her way out of trouble, and insults herself as a distraction, while also helping vulnerable women.
Theme: Be self-reliant and love life
