At the end of the blue-stone lane stood two old tailor shops side by side. The Cheng family on the east side of the street had raised a girl who was like a little sun: Cheng Keyi. She was confident and outgoing, and when she smiled, her eyes curved into crescent moons. While helping her mother greet customers, she spoke with quick, clear wit, and everything she did, from handing over fabric to taking measurements, had a crisp efficiency to it. On her way to school, she was always chattering away about the latest news, full of a lively energy she couldn't hide.
The Su family on the west side had a son, Su Cai, who was quite the opposite. Though he wasn't much of a talker, he was full of clever ideas. When learning needlework from his father, he was focused and exacting, unusually sensitive to the feel of fabric beneath his fingertips and the spacing of each stitch. Su Cai was gentle and reserved. Cheng Keyi's warm, open nature would make the tips of his ears turn red, but he always remembered that she didn't like cilantro. On school days, he would save her a window seat in advance and quietly hand her a tissue to wipe away her sweat.
One child from each tailor shop: one like bright orange sunlight, the other like a gentle, uncut gem. They walked to school together through the morning dew. On the way, Cheng Keyi chattered about the neighbors' latest antics while Su Cai listened quietly, occasionally replying. Their silhouettes reflected on the blue-stone road, becoming the old street's most heartwarming sight.
The author left a little Easter egg, too. The name is not only a combination of the male and female leads' names, but also a homophone for "tailor shop."
