During the golden age of Cantonese opera in Republican-era Guangzhou, Su Yao of the Fengming troupe and Lin Yue of the Yuming troupe met as rivals performing "Farewell My Concubine" and "Mu Guiying Takes Command." Su Yao's clear singing conveyed sorrow, while Lin Yue's graceful movements revealed her inner strength. They were fierce rivals on stage and kindred spirits off it, secretly vowing to "be together in every life." But Su Yao's heart disease worsened. Concealing her condition to fulfill her dream of performing, she finally collapsed in Lin Yue's arms and died as the curtain fell on "Farewell My Concubine" on the winter solstice, leaving Lin Yue to spend the rest of her life with the opera script and a silver hairpin.
