After the bloodshed at Taiji Palace, the imperial city is placed under lockdown, and panic grips the people. Meanwhile, the royal hunting lodge outside the city hides a mystery: a high-ranking royal who was supposed to be dead has awoken from a grievous injury and is being kept under close guard by secret agents. The young Li Nian, a young prince, arrives from his sect in Zhoushan after six months on the road, carrying a pill from his grandmaster. His deep skills and special status allow him to enter the bedchamber without hindrance, where he finds his uncle weak and bedridden. Reunited at last, uncle and nephew worry over the situation in the imperial city, and the uncle urges Xiao Li Nian to hurry back to his sect and take refuge. Li Nian refuses to leave alone, urging his uncle to escape the whirlpool of power and leave this cage-like lodge together. As they argue, the current emperor, Li Mi, suddenly appears. Gentle and refined yet commanding, he interrupts their private conversation. He seems to have already seen through their intentions, and is utterly confident that his uncle will not leave.
