Obsessive mature man vs. caged songbird who refuses to be trapped | First-person narration
[Blurb 1]
He looked at the person sitting on the edge of the bed, sulking. His heart ached, and he felt so tender toward her that he couldn't speak.
His most beloved wife, and the one he had hurt most deeply, was sitting right in front of him. A layer of erased memories lay between them, and she had forgotten her inadequate husband.
She was jealous and hurt, throwing a little tantrum with him over someone she didn't know was herself.
He threw off the covers and got out of bed, reaching for her hand. She pulled away. He reached again, and she pulled away again.
He patiently tried once more.
After struggling a few times without getting free, she stopped and turned her face away in displeasure.
"Darling," he said softly. "Turn around."
She didn't move.
"Turn around," he repeated gently. "I'm talking to you."
Reluctantly, she turned her head. Her eyes were wet, and she looked like an interrogator waiting to hear his defense.
[Blurb 2: The Male Lead's Monologue]
For months, in the dead of night, I often dreamed about my wife.
She treated me badly.
You could call her cruel.
She hated me as if I were her most bitter enemy. For a long time, she stayed by my side, speaking sweetly, while thinking about how to leave me.
Back then, I was helpless, too. Work was a mess, and so was home. In the middle of the night, I would spread my hand over my wife's slender neck. With just a little pressure, I could snuff out the beautiful, fragile light in her eyes.
Then I would pull my hand back.
I couldn't do it, so I could only smoke to calm myself.
My wife lay on my chest, her bright black eyes full of innocent curiosity. "What about now?"
"She's gone." I calmly lifted her into my arms.
I lied. She was right in front of me, but she had forgotten our past.
