In 2000, Lu Ling had already published several novels, and her work had been adapted into household-name TV dramas. Her husband was successful, and her daughter was bright and adorable.
Just as she resolved to break through her writer's block and take her career to the next level, her husband suddenly went bankrupt, fled to America, and left her with his debts.
Lu Ling refused to leave her homeland, and despite her dire finances, she resolutely divorced him.
When she was in her teens and at her poorest, her senior schoolmate Pu Hong had helped her discover her talent. As soon as he learned she was divorced, he rushed to find her with an engagement ring in hand.
Only after hearing his proposal did Lu Ling smile and say, "But Kai Ji and I got our marriage license last month."
His half-brother, Yu Kaiji, wheeled himself out. "Brother, you were the one who kept bringing her home to write back then. That's how I met her."
Nearly twenty years ago, the three of them had lived under the same roof. Lu Ling knew Yu Kaiji was a genius in chemistry, but she had no idea that even then he was her most devoted reader and pen pal.
Having chosen money and passion when she was young, now she wanted a marriage that was purely platonic.
On the wedding day, since her parents had both passed away, Pu Hong escorted her to the ceremony with his arm linked through hers as her senior schoolmate. Yu Mo, Yu Kaiji's adopted son, had just won an equestrian competition in Europe and came to the wedding as well.
The young man, eighteen or nineteen, watched her at the wedding and blushed, just as his father had when he first saw her.
A few months later, consumed by the pain and confusion of writer's block, Lu Ling held the young man who had boldly pursued her close in the dead of night.
After that, everything spiraled out of control:
Pu Hong used evidence of their affair to threaten her into divorcing Yu Kaiji;
Yu Mo rushed into the stands and kissed her in front of the cameras when he won a major competition;
she discovered the letters Pu Hong had written her twenty years earlier, which Yu Kaiji had hidden away;
and her ex-husband, now rapidly wealthy and successful in America, returned to ask her to remarry him.
Meanwhile, the film adaptation of Lu Ling's novel, Love, Lies, and Draft Paper, won six awards at the Cannes Film Festival, including Best Screenplay.
Everyone turned the spotlight on the woman writer behind the film.
[Content Warnings]
1. The female lead is not a virgin, while the male leads are. Every man fell for the female lead at first sight when he was young, and she is the only one for each of them in this lifetime. The men all have their own flaws, and the story includes melodramatic misunderstandings, deception, and possessive pursuit.
2. The female lead is already 36 at the start. If that's not your thing, proceed with caution. She isn't beautiful, but she is talented. She grew up poor and shines brilliantly in middle age. Her thinking reflects the limitations of her era, but she also has her own progressive views. She's naturally passionate and easily tempted.
3. Half the story follows the female lead's growth, and half is romance. There are many flashbacks from the 1980s through the 2000s, and the ending or extras also cover the female lead's life after 2020.
4. The plot may or may not get wild.
