After Finding a Match for His Childhood Bride, the Powerful Man in This Period Novel Regretted It

Nie Jiangrong was sixteen when he first joined the army.

After crossing the river on a bamboo raft, he never once looked back at his reluctant parents or little Su Li, who was crying and calling after him.

Nie Jiangrong was thirty when he was promoted to regiment commander.

The organization wanted to help older comrades find spouses, and as a commander over thirty with no family, he had to set a good example.

While filling out his marital history, it took several reminders before he remembered that back in his hometown, he had a child bride he hadn't seen in years.

It was an outdated custom, but old historical problems still had to be dealt with.

Maybe... he should marry her?

Commander Nie immediately shook his head. He had always thought of her as a little sister, for one thing. And for another, they were twelve years apart, practically a generation.

Nie Jiangrong's sycophantic aide offered a suggestion. Since that was the case, why not bring his child bride over and find her a good match? Wouldn't that be a good deed?

When they met again, Nie Jiangrong was thirty, and Su Li was eighteen.

Commander Su never imagined that the little girl who used to trail after him with a runny nose would grow into such a lovely young woman, like a flower bud just beginning to bloom.

She smiled at him and, just as she had when she was little, called him "Brother Jiangrong."

Nie Jiangrong froze for a long moment, his heart strangely unsettled.

The whole regiment knew Commander Nie was looking for a match for a young woman from his hometown. For a while, excellent young men came knocking in droves.

Su Li was bright and beautiful, a real head-turner, and she had a relative like Commander Nie. What a wonderful match she would make!

Before long, the threshold of Commander Su's home was nearly worn away.

Nie Jiangrong, putting on airs as her elder, watched the young woman chatting and laughing with one fine young man after another. His composed, kindly smile slowly began to falter.

With drink weighing on his heart, he couldn't help blocking her in her room. His throat bobbed, but he couldn't get a word out.

The young woman only looked at him with a captivating glance.

"Didn't you hope I'd find the right partner for life, so I wouldn't be your child bride anymore, Brother Jiangrong?"

Nie Jiangrong felt the words stick in his throat. He regretted it. He truly regretted it!
