Synopsis of Afterglow
A blurred graduation photo showing Shen Nian's profile becomes Lin Yubai's most precious keepsake of his beloved for the rest of his life.
In high school, beneath the camphor trees, Lin Yubai falls for the clean nape of Shen Nian's neck. When they take their graduation photo, he quietly leans closer, and the warmth of their uniforms brushing together becomes a vivid memory of youth. But when the photo is developed, Shen Nian's figure is shrouded in a thin haze. The boy smiles and says, "It's enough if you remember me." Lin Yubai believes this memory will never fade.
For their love, they defy their parents' objections and flee to a seaside town in the south. Lin Yubai works as an architectural designer, while Shen Nian runs a little bookstore. Sunflowers bloom in their courtyard, and their footprints remain by the sea, side by side. They don't care for taking photos. Lin Yubai keeps his beloved's features in his heart: the dimples when he smiles, the furrow in his brow as he reads, the tip of his nose turning red when he eats spicy food.
A car accident leaves Shen Nian forever frozen on an afternoon spent waiting for beef brisket with tomatoes. Lin Yubai searches the whole house and finds only the yellowed graduation photo. Clutching it, he desperately tries to recall the past, but his memories slowly blur. He even begins to lose certainty about the color of his beloved's hair.
In his dreams, he returns to the lawn where Shen Nian is waiting. The pain of their foreheads knocking together and Shen Nian's petulant complaints feel utterly real. But when Lin Yubai says he has to go home and cook, the warmth in his arms vanishes, leaving only a cold gravestone before his eyes. In the end, Lin Yubai understands that some memories will inevitably fade, but the afterglow of their time together will sustain him as he watches every spring on his beloved's behalf.
