At the end of the story, the dragon stood atop the frozen world, gazing down at it and feeling that life was as lonely as snow. Then he killed himself.
And so humanity welcomed the dawn.

Today I met an older sister from my own kind. I was so surprised. I thought I was the only dragon in the world. She was disguised as a human and seemed a little afraid of me. I didn’t tell her that her disguise was terrible. I could smell her lovely scent from ten miles away.
Her scales are so beautiful, and her eyes are like stars. I grabbed her and flew high into the sky. I don’t know why, but she screamed and kept shouting, “Don’t eat me!” Who would eat her? I looked all around, but there were no enemies.
Lately, I keep getting fevers. My cheeks are so hot, and I keep getting nosebleeds. Big Sister says I’m about to come of age. What does that mean? I don’t understand. All I know is that Big Sister’s lips are so soft. They make me want to kiss her.
Big Sister’s lips really are soft. But the rest of her is even softer.
