Xu Ran was invited to promote her new book in an audio interview, when a commenter revealed that the male lead was based on one of her high school classmates.
The host seized the opportunity to ask, "Are you still in touch with that classmate?"
Xu Ran was silent for two seconds before replying, "Like in the novel, we haven't been in touch since we broke up."
The comments exploded, flooded with requests for the second book about a broken couple getting back together.
After the livestream, her friend, who had just gotten off a plane, cornered her at her door and insisted she accompany him to a matchmaking date. To her surprise, the other person was the very man who had inspired her novel: Qi Sizhou.
The man wore a black turtleneck that outlined his sleek shoulders and back. The collar was slightly loose, revealing a stretch of cool, pale skin at his neck.
Xu Ran instinctively tried to escape. He leaned down and closed in, his breath brushing her ear. "You wrote well."
She thought it would end there, but before long, Qi Sizhou became her neighbor.
After a class reunion, the power went out at Xu Ran's place, so she went to Qi Sizhou's to borrow some electrical equipment. But he caught her and pinned her against the wall.
"Xu Ran, what did you mean by making me the model for your novel?"
His words hit her right where she was softest. Xu Ran said nothing, but he pressed on, advancing into the fortress of her heart.
"Do you want to get back together?"
Xu Ran answered instinctively. "Yes."
Bonus scene
Reader: "Author! Can we get an alternate-universe extra? I want to see the male lead suffer while chasing his wife!"
Xu Ran was about to reply when someone pulled her into his arms.
Qi Sizhou rested his chin on her head, his voice lazy. "Chasing my wife? She's the one who chased me!"
That night, Qi Sizhou wore her out, but Xu Ran still insisted on posting an update to Weibo: [The extra is up. The male lead starts chasing his wife in chapter one!]
