In the second year after Cheng Zheng and Lin Su got back together, rumors spread like wildfire that she was going to enter a marriage alliance with someone else.
A mutual friend mocked him over it:
“You treat her like your girlfriend. What does she treat you like?”
“Since middle school, you’ve been trailing after Lin Su. She crooks a finger, and you come running like a dog.”
“Cheng Zheng, have you no self-respect?”
At the time, he leaned against the counter, the cigarette between his fingers glowing red and fading. After a long while, he laughed.
“I love being someone’s dog. Got a problem with that?”
He said it with such swagger, but when he actually saw her with someone else, he couldn’t bring himself to be so magnanimous.
That was when Lin Su came back from meeting her intended match.
He lay feverish on the cramped sofa in his rented apartment, staring at her in silence.
She asked:
“Cheng Zheng, what would make you happy?”
“If I let you go completely, broke up with you, and never saw you again, would you be happy?”
Every word sounded like a question, but was really more like a provocation.
What would make him happy?
After a long pause, he laughed softly and replied:
“Kiss me.”
