A Li is the last ghost in the world. Her ghostly powers are weak, and no one can see her. The worst thing she has ever done in her ghostly life was scare off three fake Taoist priests who came to the rich man's house to swindle him.
One day, a fourth Taoist priest came to the rich man's house. He was fragrant and handsome.
A Li drooled over him and stayed by his side without budging.
One day, they ran into each other around a corner, and the Taoist jumped in fright, letting out a scream.
He could see her!
Overjoyed, A Li put on a fierce face. "I am the Ghost King. Pay tribute."
For the sake of the delicious-smelling Taoist, no, for the sake of his offerings, A Li followed him out of town. The ghost and human teamed up flawlessly to champion justice (and swindle and cheat people).
One day, as they happily counted their money, a vicious ghost suddenly appeared. As they fled, they both shouted at once.
A Li: "Aren't you a Taoist? Hurry up and capture him!!!"
Yuan Zhen: "Aren't you the Ghost King? Hurry up and destroy him!!!"
They looked at each other, then ran in opposite directions in perfect sync. The human-and-ghost team broke up just like that.
More and more vicious ghosts reappeared in the human world, and all the ghosts bowed down in submission. Only then did A Li realize: So I really am the Ghost King!
With chaos descending upon the world, A Li went to subdue the rebellious evil ghosts, but beneath the ghost-slaying array, she saw a familiar figure. So he wasn't a fake Taoist after all!
Both of them looked sheepish as their secrets came to light.
Then one day...
A Li stubbornly insisted, "I always said I was the Ghost King."
Yuan Zhen looked away. "I always said I was a Taoist ghost hunter."
A Li glared at him. "Then are you going to capture me?"
Yuan Zhen blushed. "Your Majesty, the Ghost King, may take me away..."
A Li's eyes lit up. She carried him off that very night, leaving behind only a note.
The next day, the young Taoist priest at Baiyun Temple cried, "The sky is falling! A female ghost has stolen our incense offerings! And the abbott was stolen away by the female ghost while trying to protect them!"
