At first, Lin Jiao had a nightmare. In it, a young man played with a little black snake and smiled at him, inviting him in a bewitching voice to a place called Lianlong Mountain.
After waking, Lin Jiao chose to continue his unchanging life. Every day, he opened his eyes in his tiny rental, washed his face and brushed his teeth in front of the mirror, then rode his bike to work like a beast of burden at a small company, nine to six. After work, he returned to his rental, washed up in front of the mirror, and went to bed.
As an introverted college graduate with no parents, he had been badly ripped off when renting. He paid twenty percent above market price for a small, run-down room. It had poor natural light and thin walls, but at least it was close to work.
Looking at the peeling walls, Lin Jiao sighed. Life had to go on. Once he got paid this month, he'd find another place. Luckily, a woman at work had been kind enough to recommend a decent listing. He planned to go see it that weekend and, if it worked out, put down a deposit.
But things went wrong before he could put his plan into action. One strange, supernatural event after another happened around Lin Jiao. First came a bizarre dream, then a mirror that inexplicably began to seep water, a red, human-shaped bloodstain that appeared under his bed for no reason, and a sparrow that hopped in through the window without dodging or blinking...
Lin Jiao was introverted and timid. He had no idea what was going on, so he asked the landlord, who said it was nothing, just that the place was old.
Lin Jiao didn't let his guard down. A few nights later, he saw a red moon appear with his own eyes, overlapping and replacing the moon that had originally shone white.
All the trees outside turned red, along with the house and everything inside it!
Terrified, Lin Jiao huddled on the bed, praying that it was a hallucination, or a dream...
He was sick for several days. A friend came by with an expert, who showed Lin Jiao a way forward:
In the southwest of this continent stands a mountain called Lianlong. Within it is Lianlong Stockade, where someone can solve Lin Jiao's predicament.

In ancient times, a divine deer was born carrying the moon in its mouth. Unable to bear this filthy human world, it stepped into the sky and departed.
Those who witnessed this strange spectacle revered the divine deer as the stockade's deity and carved an image of it.
A hundred years later, a child born carrying the moon in their mouth was born in the ancient stockade...
