Su Che has been having terrible luck lately.
He was playing Fight the Landlord and had a 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7, but no 7. He was eating instant noodles and had no fork. Then his neighbor's oversized Samoyed pounced on him, sending him straight to the King of Hell's domain.
There, he met his grandfather, who had been dead for years and was as irreverent as ever.
"You weren't supposed to come this early." His grandfather rubbed his thumb and forefinger together. "But, well, our family owes the folks upstairs some money, so we can only have you come work it off."
Su Che: "???"
"So, what's it going to be? Sell yourself or work for us?" His grandfather offered the two choices with a kindly smile.
When a person is speechless enough, they really do laugh.
Su Che laughed himself awake in the hospital.
He thought everything he'd experienced had just been a dream, so he paid it no mind.
But that night, the old man in the next bed sat bolt upright, shuffled over to his bedside, and rasped, "Hey, buddy, got a light?"
Su Che was focused on his phone. Without looking up, he said, "No. I don't smoke."
The old man didn't leave.
For some reason, Su Che got goosebumps. Just as he was about to look up and say something, he saw the peaceful, motionless mound beneath the blanket in the next bed, and the straight line on the monitor beside it.
When it rains, it pours. Before long, his creditor came calling too: a male ghost who had been dead for hundreds of years.
He was very handsome, just like the enchanting demons in stories who fed on people's vital essence.
But he was sharp-tongued and aloof.
"I hope you'll cherish your life and stop doing foolish things before you fulfill our agreement."
Su Che treated him like his immediate superior, diligently accumulating merit as he encountered strange people and bizarre events. To his surprise, the human and the ghost got along remarkably well.
At the time, he could never have imagined that one day in the future, as dusk fell and the stifling summer wind swept in through a window left ajar,
the enchantingly handsome ghost would kneel between his legs, hold his wrist, and keep him confined in that tiny space. Cool, long hair brushed his neck, sending a shiver through him.
Pressing his forehead to Su Che's, the ghost softened his gaze and coaxed him in a pitiful whisper: "Xiao Che, won't you kiss me?"
