When Su Bai was ten, his parents sold him.
They took a thick stack of red banknotes and shoved him toward the buyer. When he looked back, all he saw was greed on his parents' faces.
From then on, he became a possession kept in captivity.
Gland surgery was extremely harmful to an Omega. By the time he was lying on the operating table again, Su Bai's eyes had grown almost entirely placid.
His pheromones were fading, and with them went his will to live.
Su Bai never imagined he might one day escape that place.
The first time they spoke properly, he was sitting on top of an Alpha.
Pheromones filled the air, and before him was the Alpha's cold, impassive face.
The gentle Alpha treated him like a younger brother, caring for him attentively but never crossing the line.
Su Bai greedily wanted more. But after he saw the Alpha with another Omega, his sensitive, insecure self ran away.
He didn't dare ask for the truth. Once again, he retreated beyond the safety of arm's reach.
He didn't know the Alpha was searching for him like a madman. It was then that he learned the Alpha's secret.
-
The first time Mu Yin saw Su Bai, he was an Omega who had just had a mark removed. His gland was badly damaged, and someone had tossed him carelessly onto Mu Yin's bed.
People said Su Bai had been passed from hand to hand too many times, and accused him of every kind of loose behavior. Their voices were full of mockery.
Mu Yin lowered his eyes and drew Su Bai into his arms amid everyone's laughter.
Those brief thirty minutes were the only comfort either of them had known in the first half of their lives.
An Alpha who cannot mark an Omega,
An Omega who can never be marked again,
It seemed fate had played a cruel joke on them.
In the years that followed, the two of them clung to each other in bed every night, only wanting to leave their scent on one another.
"A pointless entanglement, but one I cherish all the same."

The point of view is not fixed.
My next novel, Qiang Nan, is available to preorder. If you're interested, please add it to your collection!
Blurb:
Qiang Nan found a little boy and raised him with such care that people around them joked he was raising himself a wife.
When the boy grew up, Qiang Nan became his wife.
The boy had been left at the entrance to an orphanage. He looked like he had only just been abandoned, and his cheeks were still warm.
Qiang Nan brought him home, box and all.
His parents hadn't left him a companion, so he would go find one himself.
Eight-year-old Qiang Nan poked the boy's cheek. "How about you be my little brother?"
The boy was sleeping soundly and couldn't answer. The poke bothered him, and he gave a little grunt.
Qiang Nan thought, I'll take that as a yes.
Qiang Nan, Qiang Nan, traveling from south to north.
Qiang Nan lay beside the boy all night, pouting as he murmured, "How about I call you Qiang Bei?"
You go south, and I go north. The grown-ups say the Earth is round, so we'll never lose each other.
Qiang Bei rolled over, resting his head against Qiang Nan's shoulder, and grunted again.
Qiang Nan held the boy as they slept, and kept holding him for ten years.
The year Qiang Nan turned eighteen, he got into a university in the city.
Eleven-year-old Qiang Bei ran in from outside with Qiang Nan's admission letter, both happy and sad.
He said, "I don't want you to leave me, big brother."
So Qiang Nan took him along.
Qiang Nan had never taken what people said when he was a child seriously. Not until the day Qiang Bei came of age, when Qiang Nan found himself pinned beneath him on the bed.
Qiang Bei's tears were scalding, and they burned Qiang Nan's heart too.
It took a night of giving in before he realized that while he had never thought of Qiang Bei as his wife, Qiang Bei thought of him as his.
-
Qiang Bei thought he was the luckiest person in the world.
Because he had the best big brother in the world.
