Synopsis:
Tan Yuzhen transmigrates into a book, becoming a background NPC in a historical romance novel, with an ordinary family and an unremarkable life.
Unwilling to accept her lot, she sets her sights on the novel's most powerful villain, the minister Zong Xuzhi.
According to what she remembers, this powerful minister has a beloved fiancee who died while traveling to visit her family. The news said she was missing, and no body was ever found.
Using her resemblance to the minister's late wife, she imitates her words and mannerisms and wears a forged perfume sachet, all so that one day Zong Xuzhi will mistake her for his missing fiancee.
As she hoped, Zong Xuzhi stops to rest at an inn while traveling and catches sight of the sachet at her waist.
He freezes, calls her over, and murmurs, "You..."
Tan Yuzhen blinks, her gaze pure and confused, her tone polite and distant. "Esteemed guest, what can I do for you?"
Seeing the confusion on her face, Zong Xuzhi belatedly realizes she has lost her memory. He decides to take her back to his residence and help her regain it.
Thanks to her careful scheming and efforts, she and Zong Xuzhi marry, and she becomes the wife of a powerful minister with an exalted position.
But all lies are eventually exposed.
One sunny day, Zong Xuzhi goes to court. The fiancee who went missing appears at the gate, smiling as she says to Tan Yuzhen, "Is Xuzhi here? I haven't seen him in ages."
Tan Yuzhen decides to run. If Zong Xuzhi finds out that a woman of low status tricked him into marriage, he'll probably fly into a rage and have her cut to pieces.
She packs her things, takes everything valuable, and returns to the village. She buys farmland and a house, then settles into a peaceful life.
Her adoptive father finds her a good young man: handsome, kind-hearted, and a provincial second-place graduate with a bright future.
Tan Yuzhen is quite pleased, and the two families arrange their engagement.
On the day of the engagement, a luxurious carriage stops at the gate. A man dressed in black steps out and stares at the pair standing side by side for a long time. His gaze is sinister, his voice terrifyingly cold. "If you're getting married, shouldn't you tell your husband?"
