Bao Rongyi was the first young lady from an official's family in the capital to dare to run away from her wedding.

On the road, she found an egg in the woods. It was as big as a washbasin, dark blue-black all over. When she leaned closer, a faint glow seemed to move beneath the shell, like veins in a living thing.

She had never seen an egg like it, but she was starving and couldn't afford to be picky. She rolled it along as she went, planning to find somewhere to boil it and eat it.

Before she could even start a fire, the egg cracked.

A little snake wriggled out and looked at her with misty eyes. It rubbed against her palm, then curled around her wrist and went still.

For a while, she considered leaving it behind and running, but the little snake seemed to understand her.

By day, it wrapped around her wrist like a dark blue-black bangle. At night, it coiled around her to warm her feet.

Sometimes she teased it, and it would wriggle into her sleeves, tickling her until she laughed.

When she bathed, it would swim around in the water with her, then wind itself up from her ankles.

It was always trying to please her in its own way.

Back then, she thought it was just a well-behaved little snake.

Bao Rongyi was eventually caught and forced to marry after all. The snake was left behind in the old house.

On her wedding night, red candles blazed as laughter and chatter drifted in from outside. Her husband, whom she had never met, was being dragged around and made to drink. He wouldn't be back anytime soon.

Just as she was getting sleepy, the bed behind her suddenly sank.

Someone wrapped their arms around her from behind.

She froze, a chill running down her spine. Who would dare intrude on the bridal chamber?

The man had a cool, celestial beauty, yet his gaze was dark and wounded.

"A few months ago, you found me in the mountains. We ate, lived, and slept together, but then you coldly abandoned me.

"You know how useful I am to you.

"Why marry someone else?"

She felt something unnatural inside her, something that was not quite alive, moving wildly through her body.

His words grew more pointed, his sharp teeth seeming to graze her ear. "If you abandoned me, you should have thought about what you'd have to face..."
