Synopsis
Lin Qingxian is the legitimate daughter of the prime minister's family. Steady, dignified, and gentle by nature, she is the foremost among Kyoto's noblewomen.
After an accident on her way to a temple to pray for blessings, Lin Qingxian loses her sight, falls into a rushing river, and sinks into a coma.
When she opens her eyes again, she hears a lazy young man's voice beside her.
"Pretty girl, do you know that you should repay someone who saves your life by giving yourself to him?"
Lin Qingxian is taken in by a reclusive martial sect of swordsmen. She repeatedly explains that she is the prime minister's legitimate daughter and must not linger away from home. She will tell her father and brothers how the sect saved her life and repay them generously.
But the sect leader only smiles and shakes his head. "Your eyes haven't healed yet. How can you travel alone all the way to Kyoto, a thousand miles away?"
The young man's voice rings out, full of schadenfreude.
"My master just thinks you're easy to bully. He wants to keep you here and marry you off to me. Why not run now, while you still can?"
His few words make the sect leader erupt in furious curses.
After weighing it over and thinking long and hard, Lin Qingxian finally gives in and stays.
.
The young man seems to have a lot of complaints about her. Ordered by his master to keep her company, he is always sarcastic and barbed in his remarks.
Lin Qingxian assumes he is young and hot-tempered, with little patience, and gently reminds him,
"If you're truly tired of this, you can leave whenever you like."
He snaps back, "How considerate of you."
A fellow disciple explains, "Xu Zhilian is rude and arrogant. Please don't take offense, miss."
Xu Zhilian.
Lin Qingxian silently repeats the name in her heart, her expression calm.
.
Under pressure from his sect, Xu Zhilian has no choice but to stay with her, protecting her in public while keeping her under watch in private.
She is exactly as the rumors say: old-fashioned, rigid, and meek. Xu Zhilian teases and mocks her, but she remains unruffled, lowering her eyes without a change in expression.
"You were joking, sir. I would never take it seriously."
Xu Zhilian does this again and again, and, finding it amusing, uses his jokes to test her.
"Miss Lin, you're so tolerant of me that you're making me fall for you. If you don't mind, could it be that you plan to abandon me after we've had our fun?"
But before he can lay his feelings bare, the prime minister's household sends people to take her away by force.
Even when Lin Qingxian leaves, she has never seen his true face.
.
Later, Lin Qingxian's eyes heal. After her coming-of-age ceremony, she agrees to marry the Crown Prince and is set to enter the Eastern Palace on an auspicious day.
On her wedding day, before the lucky hour arrives, someone lifts her veil.
She looks up and sees an unfamiliar young man, drenched in blood.
"Stealing the Crown Prince's bride and disgracing the imperial family could get your whole family executed. Be careful," she gently warns him.
The young man's eyes redden with anger. He grits his teeth.
"Are you really going to abandon your husband and child?"
