Cool, aloof aristocratic young master receiving x sharp-tongued, gloomy, crazed aggressor
Ren Xian loathed his uncle, Ren Chunfeng, more than anything.
Unlike his father, a mighty and heroic man with an impressive record of military achievements, Ren Chunfeng was cold, rigid, and dull, like a jade carving devoid of feeling.
His father came from a family of military officers. He was cheerful and unrestrained, a true hero who held up the sky and stood firm on the earth. Ren Chunfeng, on the other hand, was merely a scholar adopted from a collateral branch of the family. He had only managed to establish himself at court thanks to the Ren family's protection, yet all day long he put on airs of lofty aloofness, as if he were too pure to be touched.
He and the rest of them were nothing alike.
But after his father died in battle, the family fell into decline, and its members scattered like monkeys fleeing a fallen tree.
Only Ren Chunfeng remained. He neither married nor entered court to vie for power, instead devoting himself wholeheartedly to looking after his widowed sister-in-law and his unruly nephew, calling it "protection."
Ren Xian found it sickening. He hated this "care" that felt like a cage.
As his uncle, Ren Chunfeng naturally kept his unruly nephew under strict discipline to repay his elder brother for years of protection. He forced him to study and learn proper conduct, hoping he would bring honor to the family.
He knew Ren Xian detested him and opposed him at every turn, rebelling and resisting. Still, he always kept his head bowed and never grew angry, as if all his nephew's fierce resistance were merely childish mischief.
Ren Xian came to hate him more and more: his eyes, forever calm and undisturbed, and his silence, as if he could see through everything yet never speak of it.
But on those nights when he jolted awake, that cool, aloof figure would not leave his mind.
After his mother died, Ren Xian ignored Ren Chunfeng's vehement objections, resolutely abandoned literature for military service, and left for the frontier.
When they met again, Ren Xian had become a general with military power in his hands and a fearsome, violent air. Ren Chunfeng, meanwhile, had become his political archenemy, a condemned official soon to be brought to the execution grounds.
Everyone thought Ren Xian would clap with delight, but all he wanted was to hear Ren Chunfeng affirm that his choice had been right.
He never expected that when he burst through the door, he would find the man dressed all in white, hanging from a beam, seeking death to preserve his honor!
