Marriage first (by law), love later
When Zheng Wanyan and Lu Yun learned of their betrothal, both resisted it fiercely, as if the sky had fallen.
Zheng Wanyan: "That Lu Yun is a notorious playboy in Chang'an, with no sense of propriety. The men in my family are all paragons of refinement. Why should I marry someone so frivolous?"
Lu Yun: "Zheng Wanyan? That delicate, helpless daughter of the Zheng family? If I really marry her, she'll probably cry all day long! I've earned countless military honors, so why should I put up with this?"
But the imperial decree granting the marriage had already arrived. No matter how reluctant they were, the two were forced to bow and become husband and wife.
On their wedding night, while drinking their nuptial wine, Lu Yun accidentally pulled the red cord too hard, spilling wine onto the chest wrap Zheng Wanyan was wearing.
She was furious and humiliated, but Lu Yun called her "a spoiled brat." In a fit of anger, she grabbed a pillow, threw it at him, and drove him out of their wedding chamber.
Word of the incident spread quickly through Chang'an's elite families.
The young noblemen Lu Yun usually dined and drank with all seized the chance to tease him.
Unwilling to lose face, Lu Yun declared, "I'll find an excuse to divorce her tomorrow!"
Much later, someone asked Lu Yun why he still hadn't divorced her.
By then, Lu Yun had gotten a taste for married life. "It's not that I won't divorce her. It's just that I have to do it gradually, carefully, and according to plan. I need to come up with a foolproof strategy, or she'll make a scene."
Later still, Lu Yun's old friends could never get him to come out with them.
Then they turned around and saw him massaging Zheng Wanyan's shoulders.
Friend: "Didn't you say you were going to divorce her?"
Lu Yun: "When did I ever say that? Don't make things up!"
That night, when they got home, Zheng Wanyan smiled at him. "Oh, so you want a divorce?"
Lu Yun expertly gathered her into his arms. "If we actually divorced, who else could take such good care of you?"
