Ji Shinian, a wanted criminal from the Zhongxiao Realm, escapes to the countryside one day and meets a prodigious young man who can blow a monster's head off with one sword strike.

The good news: The guy isn't here to arrest him.

The bad news: This guy is Xiao Shu, the arrogant protagonist of the original story!

The world Ji Shinian lives in is the setting of an Eastern fantasy cultivation revenge novel called Slaying the Immortals.

As a reader, Ji Shinian followed it for six years, watching the protagonist Xiao Shu suffer one hardship after another and grow increasingly twisted, until he became the Demon Lord Xiao Shu, all smiles on the surface but sinister underneath. Then Xiao Shu suddenly killed himself, and Slaying the Immortals came to an end...

That ending didn't make him furious enough to die. Instead, after his college entrance exams, he was hit by a car and transmigrated into Slaying the Immortals, twenty years before the story began. Somehow, he ended up a wanted criminal whom the righteous factions were all eager to kill.

Now that's a cursed connection if there ever was one.

Xiao Shu is the chosen son of Heaven in this world. His parents die when he's six, and at twenty his whole family perishes in a heavenly fire. After a century of hardship, he finally returns to the beginning of his life at the Lotus Temple.

He's six years old again, but this time someone appears in that mountain of corpses and sea of blood, and takes him to an unnamed mountain.

The other person says, "You're quite a well-behaved kid. How about calling me godfather?"

The other person also says, "I'll raise you from now on. Don't get lost."

Xiao Shu doesn't lose track of this unexpected presence in his life, but the other person leaves him behind, and he returns once again to the path of his fate.

Ten years later, beneath the mountain of the Red Oriole Illusion, he meets a fiancee. Hidden behind a light veil, "she" appears again and again at the milestones of his original life.

The other person acts however he pleases: "I came to see if you're dead."

The other person is exasperated: "Are you useless? You couldn't even dodge that?"

The other person is as guileless as ever: "You're too kind, Young Master Xiao."

He knows that person isn't part of his destiny. He knows he's skilled at crafting artifacts, knows he says that being a good person is the hardest thing, and knows he flashes through the Zhongxiao Realm, never for his own sake.

He also knows who his original "fiancee" was.

From the moon shining with three images at the center of that person's brow to a familiar gait that cannot be concealed, no matter what, he sees that the other person's face is as lively as it was many years ago.

He asks who the other person is.

Even if "she" doesn't answer, he knows.

He is the autumn forest missing from his false childhood, nowhere to be found in his fate.

Notes:

1. Rebirth vs. transmigration into a book. Not a strength-growth story; both leads have cheat abilities. The gong is weak, but only pretending; he's a master actor. The shou is also weak, but only pretending; he's a man in women's clothing and a powerful figure with a secret identity. The novel has four volumes, with the plot and romance taking turns. It's very slow-burn, but there's plenty to read. Add it to your collection if you like it.

2. Imperfect protagonists, ensemble cast, main couple stays together and is never reversed. The main story is told from the shou's perspective. The gong gets less description early on, and the story is full of people the shou knows (not really).

3. Character art is for reference only. There are lots of rambling author notes. Please enjoy the story. Changes made during serialization are all typo fixes. If cross-dressing is a dealbreaker, please avoid.
