Synopsis
[Long Aotian vs. Heavenly Dragon] [The Bottom Dies, the Top Goes Mad] [Faked Death] [Chasing His Wife to the Crematorium]
Ye Xianqing was born into a distinguished family and blessed with striking good looks.
His greatest, most immature mistake was using his power to force Shang Yu, then an ordinary student, into a relationship when he was twenty-four.
Afterward, he tried hard to mend their relationship and learn how to love someone properly.
Though they were still distant and lukewarm, Ye Xianqing sometimes let himself believe he saw love in the other man's kisses and embraces.
Nearly five years passed. Even without Ye Xianqing's help, Shang Yu had risen to his equal, yet he still hadn't chosen to leave.
Then a System appeared in Ye Xianqing's mind, telling him that the world he lived in was a power fantasy about a male protagonist's revenge.
Shang Yu was the protagonist, while Ye Xianqing was a cannon-fodder villain destined to pay for his crimes with his life.
"He never loved you. He got together with you only so he could take revenge. As long as you correct the plot and die at the right point, we'll prepare a new identity for you. You can start a new life without restrictions."
Ye Xianqing lowered his eyes and said, "All right."
*
Shang Yu had never thought his relationship with Ye Xianqing could be called love.
Threatening him with his family to force him into a relationship was more like a degrading kept arrangement.
Of course he didn't love Ye Xianqing.
Even later, when Ye Xianqing told him "I love you" every morning before leaving, often brought him flowers when he came home, and carefully prepared for every anniversary, Shang Yu still didn't think it was love.
What he hadn't expected was that Ye Xianqing would die one day.
That day was anything but ordinary. The usually well-mannered Ye Xianqing got into a rare argument with Shang Yu.
He counted up all the years of neglect and coldness he'd endured, and the last thing Ye Xianqing said before slamming the door was the childish, "I hate you."
Then, that night, Ye Xianqing was shot in front of him and fell from the rooftop.
Shang Yu attended Ye Xianqing's funeral. Everyone there called him an ungrateful, heartless wretch. He didn't look sad at all.
He didn't argue. He just stared at the will Ye Xianqing had drawn up at some point.
Shang Yu's name wasn't in it.
Ye Xianqing left everything he owned, even the dog they'd raised together, to the childhood friend he called his childhood sweetheart.
Shang Yu didn't think he was particularly heartbroken.
Not until after the funeral, when Ye Xianqing's childhood friend came to collect the dog.
Shang Yu looked at him with a possessiveness he hadn't even known he felt, and said, every word deliberate:
"The dog belongs to both of us. You can't take him."
*
After completing the plot by getting shot in front of Shang Yu and falling from a rooftop, Ye Xianqing was sent by the System to a small town overseas, where he settled into a quiet life.
He didn't want to look back on the past or dwell on right and wrong. All he wanted was a fresh start.
Until one stormy night, his dog suddenly began barking warily at the front door. After hesitating for a long time, Ye Xianqing opened it.
A familiar figure stood outside, soaked through, black hair dripping with water. He had no idea how long the man had been waiting there.
Ye Xianqing was shaken to the core. All he wanted was to shut the door again and pretend nothing had happened.
But the other man braced it with one hand to stop him, then lowered his eyes to the Bernese Mountain Dog beside him.
"You don't want me anymore? Decided to get a new dog?"
A former lovesick rich heir who has finally come to his senses x a cold, aloof man who acts all tough but is actually crazy
[Content Warning]
Over-the-top melodramatic dog-blood romance
The bottom dies, the top goes mad; faked death and chasing his wife to the crematorium
Both are virgins, 1v1, no switching partners
Written purely for personal tastes, a self-indulgent work with lots of melodrama
Neither lead is perfect, and both are at fault. Not suitable for readers with strong preferences about either character.
Theme: Was the way I loved you wrong?
