[Blurb]
Sang Huai was an orphan living on Mount Taiping. She made her living by looking after her seriously ill grandmother and working hard to farm at the mountaintop.
Then one day, a divine lord descended to the mortal realm. He pulled out a large handful of gleaming silver and beamed at her. "Miss, I can tell you're exceptionally gifted and have a remarkable character... You're just the talent I've been looking for! Come with me to the heavens. I'll make sure you eat well and live in luxury!"
...Come on, how could a poor girl like her resist an offer like that?
Sang Huai's eyes went wide. She wiped away the drool escaping partly because of his good looks and partly because of his generous offer, then decisively took him on as her boss. Without a moment's hesitation, she carried her grandmother on her back and went up to the heavens, where she became an employee at a massage parlor for the gods.
In Dongming Palace, among the thirty-six heavens, Sang Huai was the only mortal.
New to the place, she was tongue-tied, awkward, and low in status. Her fellow immortals all looked down on her.
But Sang Huai soon noticed something keenly: since she had no magical powers, her clients didn't have to worry about her peeking into the secrets of their spiritual consciousness during a session. The many divine lords troubled by inner demons took a particular liking to her!
Making the most of her advantage, Sang Huai worked away with the same tireless determination she'd put into plowing and planting in spring. So when she received her boss's reward, she was moved to tears...
For the spirit medicine her boss had promised her grandmother, and to save enough silver to buy a home in the mortal realm, Sang Huai made a solemn decision:
She would become the most useful donkey in her boss's employ!
--So when the Celestial Venerable sent down heavenly lightning to dispel a murderous calamity, she was helping a badly injured, foul-tempered divine lord enter meditation;
--When the thirty-six heavens fell into chaos and the three great calamities swept back upon them, she was helping a cold and aloof divine lord who'd gone into qi deviation refine essence into qi;
--And even as the world fell into disorder and Yujing faced the danger of collapse, she was still diligently and cheerfully helping clients undress and bathe!
Then one day, she woke to find Dongming Palace in ruins.
Her boss had run off, all her coworkers were gone, and Sang Huai stood alone amid the wreckage, lost and helpless.
A man who looked thoroughly sinister and murderous, and clearly nothing good, crushed the spirit pill of some unknown divine lord in his palm and sneered at her. "A mere mortal dares meet my gaze... And you still haven't run? You must be very brave."
Sang Huai was so terrified she nearly fainted on the spot, but she still managed to summon every ounce of strength and roar so loudly that her voice rang through all thirty-six heavens:
--I'm not leaving! Not unless you pay me the wages my boss owes me!!!
