Marriage first, love later | The heroine is frail at first, then grows stronger | Bickering enemies with a daily dose of banter | The hero thinks he has beaten his cousin, but ends up losing his own heart
[Jade-faced stubborn general x scheming, frail beauty]
Zhen Chanruo, daughter of the Vice Minister of Rites, was born with a sickly constitution, so frail a breeze could topple her. She dreaded the cold, had an extremely yin birth chart, was timid and fearful, and no medicine could cure her.
Until one day, a wandering Daoist pointed her in the right direction: "Your illness cannot be cured with medicine. You need to find someone with abundant yang energy and keep him by your side. That may change your fate."
"Who in all the land has the most yang energy?"
"The young general, Nie Xun."
To save her life, the timid Chanruo summoned up the courage for the first time and carefully plotted a runaway-horse accident. Sure enough, he stepped in to save her.
And, quite by accident, she disrupted his elegant, highborn matchmaking appointment.
Nie Xun was just as renowned for his military achievements as the rumors claimed. With his sword-like brows and bright eyes, he inspired awe without even trying. The emperor had personally appointed him a Colonel of Martial Might, and to the young ladies of the divine capital, he was the jade-faced Shura, a man beyond their reach and only fit to dream about.
But he was utterly clueless about romance and blunt to a fault, a block of wood who could infuriate her to the point of vomiting blood!
What left her flattered, however, was how Nie Xun's father, a great general, and his mother, a princess, treated her, a mere vice minister's daughter, as their own and doted on her.
On their wedding day, the wedding candles blazed as she married the medicine that had saved her life.
Then the figure who should have been sealed away in her memories entered the wedding hall in a Daoist robe, smiling.
"It's your cousin's big day. Why didn't you invite me over for a celebratory drink?"
Xiao Jingze's gaze passed over the bride's pale face. "What is it? Were you afraid I'd steal your bride?"
Since childhood, Nie Xun had lived in the shadow of his cousin, Xiao Jingze, the heir to Prince Shu, who had once dazzled the divine capital. Whether it was his literary talent, his grace, his horsemanship, his archery, or his strategy, Nie Xun always seemed to fall short.
Now, by an unexpected twist of fate, he had married the woman Xiao Jingze once treasured above all else. Nie Xun couldn't deny the secret satisfaction of finally winning one over him.
But he never imagined that the wife he'd won would be such a handful. She was a pampered little thing who could unleash a whole string of crooked arguments whenever they quarreled. Worse yet, it seemed this hard-hearted man had been the first to melt.
Just as Zhen Chanruo thought she'd found a good man, she happened to deliver a meal to Nie Xun's camp and noticed that one of his centurions looked familiar. It was the wandering Daoist from all those years ago.
Wait, who was the real prey?
A few phrases floated through Zhen Chanruo's mind.
Luring someone into a trap, catching a turtle in a jar, walking straight into the net, already caught in the snare...
[Bonus Scene]
Nie Xun returned from court and had just stepped into the courtyard when he saw Zhen Chanruo wrapped in a thick cloak, gazing longingly at the sun.
He paused, then walked over. His tall figure completely blocked the sunlight before her eyes.
Zhen Chanruo: "..."
Her sun was gone.
She sighed softly. "Husband, you're blocking me from absorbing yang energy to nourish my yin."
At that, Nie Xun furrowed his sword-like brows and bent down to scoop her into his arms.
"Ah!"
Zhen Chanruo cried out and instinctively wrapped her arms around his neck.
"It's windy outside. You'll catch a chill."
He carried her briskly toward the room. "Medical texts say that skin-to-skin contact transfers yang energy, and is far more effective than basking in the sun."
The door slammed shut.
That dose of yang energy nearly killed her.
