Lin Ruoxi, a modern law doctorate, accidentally touches her ancestral emerald bangle while studying The Great Qing Legal Code at the Palace Museum, and is swept into a vortex through time and space. When she wakes, she is dressed in a blue robe and finds herself in the Ministry of Justice's prison in the twenty-fifth year of the Qianlong reign (1760), clutching the bangle in her arms. The four characters engraved on its inner side, "Exercise Caution in Punishment and Show Compassion to the People," are identical to those personally inscribed by the Qianlong Emperor on the Ministry of Justice's plaque, foreshadowing her fate in the Qing Dynasty.
