Zhong Wan's husband was a sickly man. She had married into the Yuwen family to bring him good fortune, and fortunately the marriage had worked: her husband grew healthier by the day. Especially at night, he was nothing like a sick man. It was just that he never said a word, and was fierce and cold, unlike the gentle, kind man he was during the day.
One day, after they had finished, Zhong Wan snuggled into her husband's arms and wheedled softly, "Husband, I still like the way you are during the day best. Don't be so cold from now on, like that fiend of an elder brother of yours. He's so unpleasant."
The man said nothing. He turned her over and pressed down on her again, even more fiercely and impatiently than before.
Because her husband was so good to her during the day, Zhong Wan put up with however difficult he was to please at night. That is, until one day she discovered that her husband was keeping a concubine outside the home.
Heartbroken, Zhong Wan threw down a divorce agreement and left.
Before she could get out of the city, Yuwen Xuan, head of the Yuwen family and Grand Preceptor to the emperor, blocked her way with troops. He was the terrifying elder brother she had spoken of.
"Give birth to an heir, and the Yuwen family will let you leave."
What Zhong Wan didn't know was that neither the man she saw by day nor the one she saw at night was her husband. Her real husband had died long ago. The Yuwen family had found someone to marry her under a false identity so they could have an heir to carry on the family line.
The man by day was her husband's sworn younger brother. The man at night was her husband's own elder brother, Yuwen Xuan.
