Power can crumble overnight.

Shen Shuyue always keeps her brows lowered, as if wrapped in a frost that will never thaw. Her brows arch slightly, yet hold no sharpness; the corners of her eyes are neat and precise. When her pale lips press together, even the air seems to turn distant.
She cannot tell whether the feeling welling up inside her is resistance, at being bound for life to a stranger, or contempt, for her father's desperation in using a marriage contract to buy himself a little breathing room.
A marriage born of desperation eventually comes to pass.
For two years, they live like strangers under the same roof, observing an invisible boundary and staying out of each other's lives. Even their conversations are just the right degree of polite.
Su Yanqing thinks their peaceful arrangement will last a long time, until one afternoon, when sunlight falls on Shen Shuyue's hair. The latter turns, her eyes filled with a glimmer of laughter, and softly calls to her, "Mrs. Shen, what are you thinking about?"
In that instant, her heartbeat falls out of rhythm.
Looking into those warm eyes, Su Yanqing belatedly realizes that the distance she had so carefully maintained has long since melted away, and her heart has already fallen for the very person she once thought cold and distant.
