[Childhood sweethearts, love and hate]
Zhu Yuntiao and Lu Zhan grew up together. Lu Zhan was in love with her, and both families intended to arrange a marriage between them.
But just days before the wedding, Zhu Yuntiao went to Lu Zhan and told him that she had loved someone else for a long time. Lu Zhan was arrogant and childish, and she had never been interested in him.
Lu Zhan's eyes reddened as he did everything he could to make her stay. But right in front of him, Zhu Yuntiao snapped the wooden hairpin he had given her and decisively severed their relationship.
Trembling, Lu Zhan picked up the broken pieces of the hairpin one by one. He stared at Zhu Yuntiao for a long time, then gave a cold laugh, his voice full of hatred.
"Zhu Yuntiao, don't you dare regret this."
Not many days later, the Zhu family betrayed the Lu family, leading to the entire Lu family being exiled.

They met again at a friend's banquet.
Lu Zhan was the youngest Prince General in the Great Zhou dynasty, with troops at his command and power and status in abundance. Everyone present fawned over him and tried to curry his favor.
The man wore a black brocade robe and idly held a wine cup in his hand. His sharply defined face betrayed no emotion.
Then his friend's subordinate arrived with his family.
Lu Zhan looked up and met those doe-like, pitiful eyes. Suddenly, he smiled.
He said to his friend's subordinate:
"I've heard that Young Master Li and his wife are deeply devoted to each other. Now that I've seen you together, I can tell the rumors are true."
As soon as the man spoke, the people present paled. They all remembered the unfinished affair between Lady Li Zhu and General Lu.
That night, after several rounds of drinks, Lu Zhan reeking of alcohol loosened Zhu Yuntiao's sash in his friend's guest room.
"Do you understand now? I don't need a grand bridal procession to have you whenever I want. And your husband is the one who brought you to my bed."
The woman in his arms trembled, her quiet sobs just barely audible.
As dawn broke, Lu Zhan got out of bed and dressed. Looking down at her from above, he gave a mocking, offhand remark:
"Lady Li was nothing special. Now I'm glad I never married you. If you'd been this dull, I would have grown tired of you long ago."

Later, Zhu Yuntiao couldn't take it anymore and ran away.
Lu Zhan caught her and locked her in the dungeon.
The chains rattled violently. Lu Zhan gripped her waist, looking coldly down at her unfocused eyes, his voice full of hatred.
"Will you run away again? Zhu Yuntiao, you still haven't paid off the debt your family owes."
