Ballad of War

[Blurb] (August 26, 2025 edition. The entire story is complete and will update daily):

We are children of the Pearl River, we are the nation's battle cry...

A song rang out by the Pearl River, though no one knew when it had begun. Like a spark, it kindled in Ah Hai's heart a flame of resistance and the will to save his country.

His parents were lost in the bombardment. Teacher Hua found Ah Hai and his little sister hiding under a bridge and took them into the Guangzhou Children's Theater Troupe. They performed plays and raised money through charity sales. Right under the enemy's noses, they collected winter clothes and medicine for the soldiers and civilians on the front lines of the war...

It wasn't until Guangzhou was about to fall and he was sent to deliver a secret message that he learned Teacher Hua was an underground operative sent by the organization, and that the plays they performed had truly made a great difference in the struggle to save the country.

Lost and confused, he found his direction. As he traveled with the children's troupe, he kept performing and took on more and more missions that set his blood racing. They sabotaged the enemy and caused them trouble... becoming a thorn in their side, a splinter in their flesh.

Many years after the founding of New China, Ah Hai was now a white-haired old man. Standing with his grandson in the square of the Martyrs' Cemetery, he listened to children rehearse a play and felt as if victory had come only yesterday.
