Huang Jia, a living fossil of a vampire, wakes from a deep sleep to find the sun gone, her coffin sealed in concrete, the animals gone, and humanity in poor health.
Huang Jia rubs her forehead and gives a wry smile: "This is the best of times, and the worst of times."
The good news is she can walk around openly in the dark.
The bad news is she's a little afraid to bite people with six iron arms.
The people of Antai are disabled but determined, and brimming with martial spirit. They turn their knives and bullets on their friends.
Then one day, they discover an oddball.
This person is impervious to blades and bullets, eats anything, and has a mysterious fondness for collecting blood.
The simple folk of Antai: "What a freak!"
The freak Huang Jia shrugs: "Please respect vampire customs. Thanks."
In the year 1234, the sun went out. Humanity huddled underground, barely scraping by in what came to be called the Long Night of Human History.
Years later, people look back on that dark age and can't help but sigh:
It was the worst of times, and the best of times.
