Jason was twelve when Batman took him in and made him Robin. He was glad to escape Gotham's gravity and have a bright future ahead of him.

Jason was fifteen. He was still trying to save his birth mother's life when the bomb went off. He died protecting others as Robin, without a single regret.

When he regained consciousness in the Lazarus Pit, he learned that Batman had replaced him only a few months later. Fury and a thirst for revenge swept over him. It was only when he curled up on the floor of an apartment building packed with bombs, clutching his bleeding wound, that he accepted the truth: he wasn't all that important.

He went from a vengeful ghost returned from hell, to a lone wolf who turned against his own people, and finally to a discordant note in the family. Then he returned once more to the ruins that had covered his corpse. Waking beneath the yellow sands of Ethiopia, he realized that going home had become an impossible dream.

So Jason left to find his own purpose. But fate seemed to have it out for him: in the Himalayas, he lost an eye and a lower leg. Three years later, he returned to Gotham to stop his younger brother, whom he had once beaten up badly, from being swallowed by Batman's cape.

And his brother kidnapped him and made him his personal chef.

When Bruce died, Tim was at a peaceful college campus, thinking he could finally leave his vigilante identity behind and live a normal life. Perhaps it was the universe punishing him for slacking off: delayed information made him miss his golden opportunity. With a shattered crime scene and misleading clues, finding the real culprit was exceptionally difficult. At the same time, he had to find a way to bring Bruce Wayne back to this world. Neither the chaos of the timestream nor the distance between life and death could stop him.

Until then, he could only take up the cape and keep Gotham afraid of him by means completely unlike Bruce's. Just as his rule was becoming firmly established, his older brother (read: ex-boyfriend), with whom things had been going steadily well before he suddenly left and cut off contact, and who had refused to return to Gotham and support him, joined Batwoman to fight against him and came back to Gotham.
