Looking for a Period Novel

Trying to find a novel. I've forgotten most of the plot, but both the male and female leads were educated youths. The male lead had either been in the army or gone into government work, I think. He was able to return to the city, probably without taking the college entrance exam. He had a job and got one for the female lead too. His mother and the female lead didn't get along very well.
