Xu Zhiyao is dead.
When she opens her eyes again, she is lying in a hospital bed, with someone else’s face.
The police tell her that this body belongs to Jiang He, the woman who once stalked and investigated her, and was suspected of killing her.
Everyone says Xu Zhiyao died in a photography studio, and Jiang He was the only person who survived at the scene. But she remembers Xu Zhiyao’s old injuries, habits, and secrets. She even knows details the police haven’t made public.
To prove who she is, she starts investigating her own death.
But when a photograph of a sunset brings a fire from years ago back into view, she begins to realize that Jiang He knew far more about Xu Zhiyao than she remembers. The two women hadn’t merely met twice; they had secretly been investigating the same old case all along.
A missing record of a meeting, a timeline rewritten again and again, drugs mixed into someone’s food over a long period, and an argument on the night of the crime that no one can recount in full all point to an even more terrifying question:
Who woke up: Xu Zhiyao, returned from the dead, or Jiang He, who witnessed a death and forgot who she was?
She must find the murderer before all the evidence is destroyed.
She must also uncover who she really is.
