On his third day of unemployment, Shen Yan receives an offer from HR for a job paying 30,000 yuan a month. The company is called Evernight Group, and the hours are midnight to six in the morning. On his first night, the HR manager hands him a layoff list and tells him to fire one employee from the finance department before dawn.
Shen Yan looks down at it and realizes something is wrong. The finance director died in 1998, the accountant in 2007, and the cashier in 2014. There isn't a single living person on the entire floor. More absurdly, these vengeful spirits have to clock in and out, and have job titles, performance reviews, attendance records, and employment contracts. They even have to obey the company's organizational structure.
Others enter the supernatural world and study the rules desperately, just hoping to make it out alive. Shen Yan, however, realizes that as long as these things are still "employees," they fall under HR. Late arrivals and early departures mean performance deductions; eating people without authorization is a serious violation. If someone is too powerful to handle, transfer them to another position. If a centuries-old ghost refuses to follow management because of seniority, terminate their employment on the spot.
From then on, a new person emerged in the supernatural world whom no one could afford to offend. Others took detours to avoid ghosts; Shen Yan checked their files first. Others faced rule-based horror stories with a near-certain chance of death, while he went from door to door with a performance review sheet.
Eventually, Shen Yan rose from HR specialist to senior executive and pushed open the boardroom doors on Evernight Group's top floor. Seven terrifying entities whose names could not even be mentioned lightly all looked up at him from around the conference table.
Shen Yan pulled out a chair, sat down, and opened his computer. In a calm voice, he said, "Since we're all here, let's begin the annual performance review."
It looks good, although it involves some professional terms, but it really looks good on the mouth and teeth.
