Luo Lian has severe mysophobia, both psychological and physical.
Su Mi took him to see doctors and brought playmates home, but none of it worked.
Once, a child touched him and he immediately started dry-heaving.
After he started school, he would attend for a few days, then stay home for a few more, huddled in the corner of the classroom.
Then one day after school, he sensed someone watching him. He ignored it.
A few days later, a filthy, skinny child suddenly charged over and crashed straight into his arms. Luo Lian fainted on the spot.
When he woke, the child named Shen Xu was sitting on the hospital bed, playing the victim to Su Mi.
“I was so hungry I couldn’t stop myself. I’m sorry, Auntie.” What a practiced routine. Mom actually believed every word. What an idiot.
Shen Xu moved into his home. He was supposedly a playmate, but really his mother had brought him in to cure his mysophobia.
Luo Lian didn’t care. He thought if he kept giving the boy the cold shoulder, sooner or later he would leave.
But Shen Xu didn’t leave. He followed him around like a shadow.
When Luo Lian read, Shen Xu sat at the other end of the room.
When Luo Lian lost his temper and told him to go, Shen Xu waited by the door until he had calmed down, then came back.
And so it went, day after day, year after year, from middle school through high school.
Shen Xu had originally only wanted to survive. His stepfather drank and beat him, and wouldn’t give him food. Starving, he rummaged through trash for bottles he could trade for steamed buns.
That day, crouching by the roadside, he saw a beautiful child step out of a black car. He thought that if he clung to this person, he could escape that disgusting home.
He waited at the intersection for days before finally rushing out.
It worked. Su Mi took him home to help Luo Lian.
Shen Xu said yes. Of course he would help him, and he never wanted to go back to that home.
But later, he realized something was wrong. When Luo Lian ignored him, he felt miserable. When Luo Lian frowned, he grew nervous. When Luo Lian occasionally said even one word to him, he was happy all day.
He had only wanted to stay alive. Why was he becoming more and more unable to live without that person?
