Playing a Beggar at a Tourist Attraction, She Makes a Fortune in Ancient Times and Survives the Famine

In a year of famine, a thousand miles of land lay barren, corpses littered the roads, refugees besieged the city, grain prices soared, and even the people inside the city couldn’t live in peace. To give her children one more bite of food and one more day to live, Old Madam Zhang volunteered to enter a “pot tomb” and wait to die. But the “pot” had no bottom. She fell straight into a “land of immortals.” Fairies and celestial maidens stuffed her arms with divine delicacies and nectar. “Wangwang Snow Cakes”: so delicious they made her cry. “Ice and Snow Honey City”: real ice, real sweetness, and so refreshing. She was nearly buried under all the food when a pretty beggar girl came over and asked, “Ma’am, at your age, are you still playing a beggar at the tourist attraction?” The attraction’s manager arrived too. “Not bad, this old beggar’s performance is convincing. Give her a raise!” Only then did Old Madam Zhang understand that sitting on the ground and eating delicious food was called “playing a beggar” in the immortal realm! And they even paid her for it! Those light little paper bills could buy heaps of grain, oil, rice, flour, and immortal delicacies. If only she could take all this food home, her whole family could escape starvation. The moment the thought crossed her mind, she blinked and found herself back in her poor, destitute home. Her children’s cries rang in her ears as her sons and daughters clung tightly to her. “Mother, you can’t die!” “Mother, the famine will pass. We’ll get through it together. Please don’t leave us!” “Grandma, Bao’er won’t be greedy anymore. Bao’er doesn’t want steamed corn bread. Bao’er wants Grandma!” Old Madam Zhang held her children and grandchildren, her heart melting. “Good children! Mother won’t die. The immortals have saved us. Look, it’s all delicious food!”
