[About the Book] Franklin D. Roosevelt was the only U.S. president to serve more than two terms, and remains the longest-serving president in the country's history. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, Roosevelt introduced the New Deal to provide relief to the unemployed and revive the economy, rescuing the United States from the depths of economic crisis. He was also one of the leading figures among the Allies during World War II, playing a key role in shaping the postwar world order. This book is the second volume of Arthur Schlesinger's acclaimed three-volume series The Age of Roosevelt, chronicling the turbulent years of Roosevelt's first term in the White House. Drawing on both archival documents and oral histories, the author examines how the United States overcame the Great Depression through New Deal reforms, advancing social reform and progress. He also offers a precise portrait of President Roosevelt "behind the mask": his relationships with the Cabinet, Congress, and the media; his many responses and decisions; his calm and convictions; and the formidable challenges he faced.
