Captain Jiang Chen of the criminal police is investigating a bizarre "murder by advance notice" case. For three weeks in a row, a citizen receives a brand-new blank diary every Sunday, then dies as scheduled at the time and place written inside. The causes of death vary, yet there is no trace of a killer at any scene, as if death itself were a postman arriving right on time.
In the fourth week, Jiang Chen's wife, Lin Wan, receives the same diary at their door. On the first page is a line: "Tomorrow night, 8:00, Jiang Chen's home." The handwriting is exactly the same as Jiang Chen's.
