The End of the Song: I, the Emperor, Fought My Way Back from Yashan

In the first month of the second year of Xiangxing (1279), on the eve of the Battle of Yashan, eight-year-old Zhao Bing, the last emperor of the Great Song, awakens amid the raging waves. Inside his body dwells a soul from the twenty-first century. Chen Mingyuan, a graduate student of history, remembers clearly: tomorrow, Lu Xiufu will carry the young emperor into the sea and die with him; one hundred thousand soldiers and civilians will stain the South China Sea with their blood, and the Great Song’s three-hundred-year legacy will sink beneath the waves. But he remembers another saying even more clearly: After Yashan, there was no China.

So the child, barely four chi tall, dons the imperial robes and summons Lu Xiufu and Zhang Shijie in the dead of night. Under the name “Heaven’s Revelation,” he alters a single character in the long-snake formation, captures Yamen, divides the fleets, and seizes fresh water, turning the tide in the face of utter defeat. Zhang Hongfan, commander of the Yuan forces, is killed in a counterattack on the battlefield, and Wen Tianxiang is rescued from a prison ship. As one hundred thousand people sing “Man Jiang Hong” together, a new era begins.

But this is only the beginning. From the Guangzhou court’s recovery amid the ruins, to bloody battles across Jingxiang; from the ancestors’ celebration of victory at the Lin’an Imperial Ancestral Temple, to the thunderous collapse of Dadu’s domed palace; from Kublai Khan’s death on the northern steppes, to sails unfurled across the seas off Jiaozhi, the eight-year-old emperor wields modern knowledge like a sword and uses technological superiority to break through every crisis, rewriting the fate of a fallen dynasty into the opening of a golden age in just seven years.

Yashan is not the end. It is the starting point of the Great Song’s rebirth.
