Late at night, Lin Yan, a forensic doctor at the municipal police bureau, autopsies an unidentified woman whose face has been slashed beyond recognition. In the victim’s stomach, she finds a brass button. Two tiny characters engraved on it make her blood run cold: “Lin Yu.” They are the name of her younger brother, who disappeared twelve years ago.
Before she can process what she has found, a text message appears like a ghost: “Remember now?” Moments later, a strange man breaks into the forensic center and threatens her, demanding the button. If she refuses, her best friend, Tang Yu, will be next.
Forced to work with Detective Captain Zhou Ye, Lin Yan begins investigating. They soon discover that the victim is not the only one. Every body they find corresponds to someone erased from Lin Yan’s childhood memories. And the most terrifying thing of all is that she, too, is one of them: Subject 07.
The Blue House. Psychological experiments. Altered memories. A stolen brother.
As the truth is peeled back layer by layer, Lin Yan discovers that the man she has called “Father” for twenty years is not her biological father, but her uncle. Her real mother and brother are still trapped somewhere in a lightless underground facility. And the knife she was forced to pick up at the age of five was never truly put down.
Zhou Ye tells her, “You aren’t defined by your blood. You’re defined by your choices.”
Lin Yan decides she will run no longer. She will return to the Blue House, open the door locked by fear, and bring back every stolen name, one by one.
From Subject 07 to Lin Yan.
From test subject to human being.
