Synopsis
Lu Ran had never had any luck in his life. A fortune-teller said his bones were exceptionally fine, then took his family's silver and ran. He sat the imperial exams three times, and all three times he was thrown out for snoring in the exam hall. Whatever he sold in business lost value. In the end, he bought a batch of night-soil buckets, only for the government to roll out free public toilets and leave him utterly bankrupt.
The one piece of good luck he had was marrying Lu Yao.
Lu Yao was a talented young woman from a scholarly family in town. Suitors had worn a path to her door, yet she married him, the unluckiest man around. Lu Ran asked her why, and she said, "You have a good heart." Just those four words, and he remembered them for the rest of his life.
Then one day, Zhang the Landowner tricked him into delivering "stolen goods" to a brothel. He was arrested as a thief and faced exile. Lu Ran was overjoyed. "I will, I will!"
But the old Daoist looked at Lu Yao, smiling beside him, and asked in a trembling voice, "Then... what about this fellow Daoist?"
Lu Yao took Lu Ran by the arm, her smile gentle and her words clear. "He enters the Dao. I enter him."

They had seven or eight disciples, their rice jar was often empty, and their mountain gate was so dilapidated it let in the wind. But Lu Ran thought life was pretty good.
Until he discovered that the Spirit-Devouring Venerable wanted to devour his tribulation lightning, the Lord of Thunder Valley wanted to absorb his sect, the Myriad Sword Sect wanted to break his thunder arts, and Thunderclap Temple wanted to bind his heart. And his gentle, virtuous wife, who was a whiz at bookkeeping, seemed to know everything and calculate everything in advance.
Devouring spirit with tribulation lightning, all thunder returning to the sect, nine thunders merging as one... The Heavenly Thunder Sect's inheritance, severed for three hundred years, was in
